Manual hoists (also called chain blocks, hand chain hoists, or block and tackle) are simple but powerful lifting tools found in workshops, construction sites, and factories worldwide. While they are relatively easy to use, safe operation requires proper training and attention to detail.
This safety guide covers the essential practices every operator should follow when using a manual chain block.
Pre-Operation Inspection
Before every use, inspect these components:
- Load chain: Check for twisted, kinked, or worn links. Replace if any link shows elongation, nicks, or corrosion.
- Hooks: Ensure safety latches are functional. Check for hook deformation (spread throat opening, twist).
- Hand chain: Should move freely and not bind. Check for damaged links.
- Brake mechanism: Test by applying a small load. The load should hold and lower smoothly.
- Labels and tags: Capacity label must be legible. Never use a hoist without readable capacity markings.
Load Weight Verification
Never guess the load weight. Always verify the actual weight before lifting. The hoist's rated capacity must be greater than the load weight. As a safety rule, never exceed 80% of the rated capacity for routine lifts. If you do not know the exact weight, use a scale or consult the load documentation.
Proper Rigging
- Ensure the hook is centered over the load's center of gravity
- Use slings or attachments rated for the load weight
- Protect slings from sharp edges on the load
- Ensure the load chain is not twisted or kinked
- Make sure the hook safety latch is closed and functional

Operating Safely
- Stand clear of the load at all times
- Pull the hand chain smoothly ¡ª do not jerk
- Never use extended handles or cheater bars on the hand chain
- Keep hands and clothing away from moving parts
- Never leave a suspended load unattended
- Use tag lines to control load rotation
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using a hoist that has not been inspected
- Side pulling (applying load at an angle)
- Using a hoist with damaged or missing safety latches
- Exceeding the rated capacity
- Using knots instead of proper rigging hardware
- Using the hand chain as a tow line
After-Use Care
After each use, clean the hoist and store it in a clean, dry location. The load chain should be lightly lubricated to prevent rust. Never store a hoist with the chain wet or covered in debris.
