Electric forklifts are a significant investment, and proper maintenance is the key to maximizing that investment. A well-maintained electric forklift will operate more safely, last longer, and have a higher resale value. This guide covers the essential maintenance practices every operator and fleet manager should know.
Daily Operator Checks
These checks should be performed at the start of every shift and take only 5-10 minutes:
- Check battery charge level and connections
- Inspect tires for wear and damage
- Test horn, lights, and warning devices
- Check brakes (service and parking)
- Verify lift and tilt functions operate smoothly
- Listen for unusual noises during operation
- Check for fluid leaks (hydraulic oil, battery acid)
Battery Care (Most Important)
The battery is the most expensive component of an electric pallet truck or forklift. Proper battery care can double its service life:
- Charge correctly: Never let the battery discharge below 20%. Use the correct charger for your battery type.
- Water levels: Check distilled water levels weekly (for lead-acid batteries). Fill after charging, never before.
- Clean terminals: Keep battery terminals clean and free of corrosion. Use a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize acid buildup.
- Equalize charges: Perform an equalization charge monthly for lead-acid batteries to balance cell voltages.
- Lithium-ion: Lithium batteries require less maintenance but avoid complete discharge and extreme temperatures.
